Worm Moon
The March moon draws the worms up
through their earth-trails.
They sing worm songs
on their way: Spring songs,
good worm tidings.
Up, up!
to the pale yellow light,
neighboring with the bulbs
crunching their own sugars like candy;
crocus, daffodil, tulip
patches of unfurling hyacinth
all with their bells on.
The full moon blooms
in the morning. The worms know
it like the tide.
Earthworms have no eyes,
ears, teeth, or lungs. They have
five hearts.
They breathe through
their skin.
Nearly, nearly,
vegetal soil takes a first breath
as the worms
pass on their way to their special moon
and sing their songs with no lungs
and five hearts each.
